A scientifically designed soil testing instrument, the 16-T0171 Pocket Shear Vane Tester/Tor-Vane Shear is ideal for rapid determination of shear strength in cohesive soils, both in the field and laboratory settings. It allows for multiple strength values with various failure plane orientations, simplifying the testing process without the need for sample trimming. Just a reasonably flat 25mm diameter surface is required for testing.
Suggested applications include samples in shelly tubes, standard penetration samples, and split spoon samples.
The shear strength of cohesive soil is influenced by factors like loading rate, progressive failure, and pore water migration. While the vane shear tester doesn't eliminate these variables, it provides consistent values in homogeneous clay. Extensive lab testing shows excellent agreement between unconfined compression tests and the shear tester. The dial's smallest division is 0.05 kg/cm2, allowing visual interpretation to the nearest 0.01 kg/m2. Measuring ranges for the 3 vanes are 0-0.2, 0-1, and 0-2.5 kg/cm2, with conversion charts on the leaflet providing shear strength in kg/cm2 based on the adapter used, covering a total range of 0-250 KPa.
