The plastic limit (PL) is defined as the lowest moisture content of a soil that will permit a sample to be rolled into threads of 3 mm diameter without the threads breaking.

Shrinkage limit test set for soil index properties
This test is performed to determine the maximum moisture content at which the soil stops shrinking when dried.

1. Two shrinkage dishes, 45 mm diameter x12 7 mm high
2. Crystallizing dish, 57 mm diameter x31 mm deep
3. Shrinkage prong plate, manufactured from transparent acrylic and fitted with 3 metal prongs
4. Evaporating dish
5. Flexible spatula
6. Graduated cylinder, 25 ml
